International Literacy Day is celebrated every September 8 and has become an important momentum for the world to raise awareness about the importance of literacy.

This commemoration was initiated by UNESCO in 1967 to remind the global community that the ability to read and write is a basic human right and the key to achieving social and economic well-being.

The percentage of the population aged 15 years and over in Bontang City in 2023 who can read and write Latin letters is 99.16 percent. When based on gender, the percentage of male population to read and write Latin letters is greater than that of women, namely 99.88 percent and 98.41 percent, respectively.
